Layer 1, in Web3 and blockchain technology, refers to the primary or base layer of a blockchain network. It includes the fundamental blockchain protocol and consensus mechanism, where transactions are directly processed and blocks are created. Layer 1 solutions are responsible for the security, decentralization, and integrity of the blockchain. Prominent examples of Layer 1 blockchains include Ethereum and Bitcoin. Layer 1 is a critical component in the Web3 ecosystem, as it sets the foundation for higher layers, enabling various decentralized applications, assets, and functionalities on top of it.
